Managing money while traveling abroad
Keep these travel tips in mind as you prepare for your upcoming trip.
Get the best exchange rate on cash
We can help you conveniently buy foreign currency ahead of your trip at a competitive rate, but if you need more cash while you’re traveling, it can be valuable to know where to get the best rate. You may want to avoid using exchange services at hotels, as well as off-hours exchange windows at train stations and airports, as these rates can often be more expensive. Banks, American Express offices, and well-known bureau de change operations are likelier to offer competitive rates. For safety reasons, it’s good practice to limit your purchase of foreign currency to what you expect to spend.
Learn about using credit and debit cards overseas
Many travelers find it helpful to be prepared to pay with both currency and card, because it may be more convenient to use one method over the other in certain situations. If you want to use a card, here are a few preparation steps:
- Check whether the country you’re visiting accepts your payment network (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, etc.).
- Check to see if your card charges a fee for purchases made outside of the U.S. This is called a foreign transaction fee. (For INTRUST debit cards, see our Personal Accounts Fee Schedule.)
- Notify your card issuer of your upcoming trip by adding a travel alert. This will help your card issuer recognize that you are traveling instead of assuming your card was stolen. For INTRUST debit cards, you can do this through online and mobile banking.
- Talk with a foreign currency representative at your bank to better understand fluctuating exchange rates on credit and debit card purchases.
